Book Review for
The Redbreast
by Jo Nesbo
The 1st of Inspector Harry Hole series.
Voted "The Best Norwegian Crime Novel Ever Written" by Norwegian book clubs.
A superb thriller which begins with Norwegian soldiers fighting for Germany
against
the Russians in WWII. There is a covered-up murder of a soldier, the
disappearance
of a dead soldier's body, a romantic obsession, the murder of a prominent
doctor, and
a flight to safety. Years later, an old man acquires an illegal high-powered
rifle with the
help of a crooked police officer.
Harry Hole is a tall, young, and extremely capable detective. His partner,
Ellen, uses
her intuition and first impressions to find elusive clues. Ellen discovers who
the crooked
police officer is but cannot contact Harry, who is on a date with a single
mother.
The story is tense, thrilling, and weaves complicated themes throughout without
losing the reader's attention. A great book.
