Escape from the Deep --
A True Story of Courage and Survival During World War II

by Alex Kershaw

On October 24, 1944, the legendary United States Navy submarine "Tang" was
hit by one of its own faulty torpedoes. Of the 80-man crew, only nine survived.
This is their story of how they got out of their submerged boat, and then had to
survive a brutal Japanese prisoner of war camp, many of them starved and beaten
until unconscious. Even after they were rescued when the war was over, some
returned home just to find out that their wives had given up hope of their return
and had remarried. Another chapter in WWII's great legacy of courage and sacrifice.

Commander of the Tang, Richard H. O'Kane, was awarded the Medal of Honor by
President Truman.
