Book Review for

Voices

by Arnaldur Indridason

The 3rd Inspector Erlendur mystery.
A hotel doorman is found stabbed to death in the small, basement
apartment of the hotel where he worked. Even though he had worked
there for 20 years, no one seemed to know him much about him.
However, a hotel guest, who is a collector of rare phonograph records,
reveals that the doorman was once a child choirboy with a rare,
beautiful voice. Inspector Erlendur learns that just when the boy was
on the verge of stardom, his voice changed through early puberty and
his career suddenly ended, much to the great disappointment of a
father who drove his son too hard and robbed him of his childhood.
The author writes in such a way that evokes compassion for his
characters, who often have been terribly wounded by others.
A great mystery.
