Book Review for
Sharpe's Triumph (Assaye 1803)
by Bernard Cornwell
The 2nd in the Richard Sharpe series.
After being the sole survivor of a brutal massacre, Sharpe inadvertently becomes
General Wellesley's (later known as the Duke of Wellington who defeats Napoleon)
aide in the battle of Assaye where the British are terribly outnumbered and
outgunned.
However, the British and Scottish soldiers prove to be staunch under fire and
their
young
Wellesley a brave leader. At the climax of the battle, Sharpe, mad with
battle
rage,
defends Wellesley from a group of attackers after both of them are
surrounded
and
separated from their soldiers. Sharpe eventually receives a battlefield
commission
(an ensign) and is able to seek vengeance on a corrupt and
evil sergeant who has
been trying to kill him.
Action-packed and engaging from start to finish.
